The Gold Coast has been Dr Sam Dowthwaite’s home for all of his life and he’s excited to be back amongst family and friends. His primary and secondary schooling was undertaken here before completing a Bachelor of Biomedical Science at Griffith University, Gold Coast. Sam then went on to complete medical school at the University of Queensland before undergoing specialist training in ENT / Head and Neck Surgery in various placements throughout QLD. Sam gained his fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons by way of examination in 2011.

    • Sinus disease
    • Salivary gland disease

    • Chronic sinusitis
    • Sinonasal polyposis
    • Nasal obstruction
  • Snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea
    • Nasal and palatal surgery
    • Robotic pharyngeal surgery

His sub-specialty interest is head and neck oncology and microvascular reconstructive surgery. Throughout 2011 and 2012 Sam undertook fellowship training in London, Ontario, Canada where he was the head and neck reconstructive fellow under the supervision of Head and Neck Surgery / Otolaryngology Chair, Professor John Yoo. This experience was invaluable and allowed comprehensive training in all aspects of head and neck surgery including:

  • Head and neck oncology
    • Reconstructiive surgery including facial reanimation
    • Transoral robotic surgery
  • Thyroid and parathyroid disease
  • Laryngology
    • Functional voice disorders
    • Laryngeal cancer

Sam is proud to have performed the first transoral robotic surgery in the state of QLD and continues to advance robotic programs through both the John Flynn Private Hospital and Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane.

Sam’s primary aim is to provide the highest possible level of care to all his patients in all aspects of ENT / Head and Neck Surgery. He is accredited at all major private hospitals on the Gold Coast as well as Greenslopes Hospital in Brisbane. Sam has public appointments at both the Gold Coast University Hospital and Robina Hospital, and attends all the multidisciplinary head and neck cancer clinics that are integral in facilitating the coordinated care of these complex patients.

Sam is actively involved in clinical research and is a Senior Lecturer at Griffith University. He is a proud mentor to medical students, resident medical officers and specialist registrars and enjoys lecturing and teaching these motivated future leaders. Sam has published widely in various aspects of head and neck surgery and has presented at local, national and international scientific meetings. These research opportunities are currently expanding through closer ties with the Griffith University through the Gold Coast University Hospital and this will ultimately lead to improved outcomes for all patients.
