Skin Cancer

Skin cancer on the head and neck can be challenging to remove due to the multiple convexities and concavities of the face. The common types of skin cancers are:

  • BCC’s (basal cell carcinoma)
  • SCC’s (squamous cell carcinoma)

Queensland have some of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world due to population genetics and high exposure to ultraviolet light in. In addition to these non-melanomatous cancers, there are also aggressive types of skin cancer called malignant melanomas. These are generally dangerous lesions which require sophisticated work up and multidisciplinary management including surgical resection.

Our surgeons have spent a considerable amount of time training in the use of local flaps in cutaneous malignancy of the head and neck.
